Tom Kyte at Unicorn College
16th March 2009 - On Monday 9th March an interesting lecture by Tom Kyte of Oracle, USA took place at Unicorn College. The whole event took place in premises of Danube House and a high number of people took part.
The lecture was divided into two parts. The first, almost one hour block, was about Exadata, a revolutionary technology for data warehousing. The second part, approximately the same length, was on the topic How Do You Know What You Know? Or do you make technical decisions based on the right information?
We asked ...
After the lecture we asked the listeners how the lecture impressed them and what they took away from it:

It was very interesting to have the opportunity to listen, in person, to such an expert. The issue of treating, until recently, such an unimaginable amount of data is very current. I am glad I had the oppurtunity to learn what Oracle is preparing in this direction. I am extremely pleased that they were able to organize this visit to Unicorn College. |

What did I take away from the lecture? Definitely a good feeling that I saw a man who really knows his stuff and has a complete overview. Plus, for instance, that indices in databases are not always the best solution and we should think, that something is brought into operation and last but not least I had the chance to hear it all in English. |

The lecture by Tom Kyte offered us an interesting view into the actual possibilities of database systems as well as an insight into the near future. Personally, I was interested most in the second part of the lecture, which had some very useful and generally applicable things that many of us may not normally realize. |
